Question

I was wondering if it is legal to shoot archery in your backyard, assuming there is a fence around the yard to act as a protective barrier and you are shooting into hay bales.

Answer

Arizona Revised Statutes reveals only a mention of archery in four places: A.R.S. § 17-301, § 17-601, § 17-621 and § 9-461.05 and these laws do not place any limitations on archery. In reviewing a variety of municipal codes, archery was not generally prohibited and appeared to only be prohibited in city parks. This doesn' t mean its perfectly legal everywhere, however; it would be prudent to determine both the county and municipality and review their codes and ordinances for guidance. Also, if the backyard is within a homeowners association there could be a regulation effecting archery.
